Articulation/Phonology
Articulation and phonological disorders affect a child’s ability to produce sounds correctly.
Children acquire various speech sounds by certain ages (see chart below). If your child has not mastered certain speech sounds by a particular age, speech therapy services may be recommended. Articulation disorders can affect your child’s phonemic awareness, reading and spelling skills to name a few.
Age: | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |

Speech Sound(s): | P, M, H, N, W | B, T, D, K, G, F, Y | NG | L, SH, CH, J, V | TH, ZH (as in measure) | R, S, L |
Here are some tips to help your child with his/her articulation skills at home:
Repeat what your child said with an emphasis on the correct production of the sound/word.
Have your child read a book to you using their good speech sounds.
Play “memory” or “go fish” with a matching set of pictures that have you child’s target sound/s in them.
Play “I Spy” in the car, around the house, etc. Make sure you choose items that have your child’s sound/s in them.
Create a collage of pictures that have your child’s sound/s in the name.
