WUSD 2023 retirees were honored during the May 22nd Board meeting. This group of retirees were committed to the WUSD any where from 11 years to 38 years. This gave a total of an amazing 645 years of service. That's incredible! Let's give all of our retirees a #WatertownWay Shout Out for all they have done for our students, staff and families over the years. They will all be missed and we wish them well.

7th grade ELA students researched either 1960s history or 1960s pop culture as they begin to read The Outsiders. They created posters with the most important facts they found and shared with classmates during a gallery walk.

The new members of the National Junior Honor Society were inducted on Monday. These students demonstrate excellence in five criteria: scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character, and service. They are a talented group of leaders, and we are thrilled to see where their journey will take them next year serving the students at Riverside and the larger Watertown community.
Riverside Middle School Supermileage and Electrathon Teams Participate in Races!
On Friday and Saturday, May 5th and 6th, 2023, RMS Students and Advisors participated in their first races of the Supermileage and Electrathon season at Fox Valley Tech College. The teams did well, under adverse weather conditions, and some car engine issues, bringing home three 2nd place trophies.
On Monday and Tuesday, May 15th and 16th, RMS Students and Advisors participated in the final races of the season at Road America, America's National Park of Speed, in Elkhart Lake, WI. This track is just over 4 miles long, has 14 turns, and 3 rather daunting hills to climb. The weather was much more cooperative, however, the new gas engine that replaced the troubled one from the Fox Valley races gave the team similar issues.
Road America finishes were great. The Electrathon Team achieved 1st place in Endurance and 2nd place in the Car Show, or Design category. Drivers for Electrathon were Dexter Haversack and Ryan Schlatter. Drivers for Supermileage were Miranda Suhm and Matthias Unertl. Team members at RA were Abbott Skrobak and Nolan Gruchow. Advisors (Pictured) are Tyler Gruenwald, Tim Haversack, and Matt Schlatter. Jon Pickelmann, Mike Pilgreen, Laurie Domer and Jesse Domer were also a part of this wonderful experience for the teams.
What is Supermileage and Electrathon?
Supermileage - the students and advisors need to build a car (new one every 3 years) that uses a small gas-powered engine. The goal is to run the car and see who can achieve the highest fuel mileage. This is achieved through coasting, turning the motor off, and restarting it at proper times to make a run. At Road America, they needed to complete 2 laps, or about 8 miles. They get their fuel weighed before the race, then again after the race, and then they convert that measure to how much fuel is used to complete the laps. There are several classes of cars, and this year the highest fuel economy was 560 mpg+. Our car, even with the engine issues, was able to achieve about 170 mpg - and that was with the engine running full time, no shutting off and restarting.
Electrathon is similar, except the kids build battery powered electric cars. The goal is to make as many laps as possible within the hour timeframe (4 heats over the 2 days) without running out of power. This year, the team was able to complete 6 full laps (24 miles) including the large hills, in the hour timeframe. This was enough to take 1st place in the endurance challenge - one of several that each car had to compete in.
There were about 20 schools present at the event, with over 57 cars entering total. The RMS students competed against ALL other students, in grades 6-12. As the only middle school team, we did very well. Thank you to the Board and school administration for being supportive of the programs that make these types of events possible and allow for parent and staff involvement to help students be successful in learning skills that they will have for the rest of their lives!
