Program Overview

Watertown Unified School District has an extensive array of programs designed to promote a safe and drug-free learning environment for all students.  Children learn best when their social and emotional needs are being met and they possess the skills to make healthy decisions.  Prevention programs focus on these skills and needs.  Many programs are integrated into regular subjects in the classroom, while others are taught as distinct units through health or guidance classes.  Still other prevention programs are available as extracurricular activities.  Our pupil personnel services staff of counselors, social workers and psychologists is heavily involved in implementing our prevention programming.  Successful prevention starts early, is repeated often, and focuses on the whole child and his or her environment.

Alcohol, Tobacco & Drug Prevention fits perfectly into the Comprehensive Healthy Human Development curriculum that Watertown Unified School District has recently put into place.  This curriculum builds students' skills and knowledge base in general health & wellness, nutritional health, physical activity, disease prevention, hygiene, dental health, safety issues, protective behaviors, human growth & development, alcohol, tobacco & other drugs, self-awareness, appropriate behavior/responsibility, friendships, feelings/empathy, conflict resolution, stress management, decision-making, collaboration/communication, coping with change, fairness & diversity, impact of culture on individual, family & community, life work planning.  When we build skills, we form a strong foundation that protects our children from many risk behaviors.
